Art Deco style has become increasingly popular lately. Why is this French style of the 20's returning? You may or may not ask… but we can try to answer anyway! Art Deco symbolizes stability, structure, wealth, cleanliness and, of course, the Gatsby era! Without a doubt – important things nowadays! It's like the mainstream modern style, but different – more colorful. Besides, it should be noted that both styles mainly use clean lines. Cleanliness and clean lines – that's Hotsy-Totsy, as you would say in the twenties.
The wealth, sparkles, and life of the roaring 20ties – endless parties, great atmosphere, and extravagance. It is a great era that celebrates today and gets inspiration from the future. And it is noticeable in the interior design as well – rich decor, modern lines, and elegance.
Gatsby’s style is actually ArtDeco design. It is sometimes referred to as “Gatsby’s style” because of the famous movie and novel “The Great Gatsby” that was set in the 1920ties when ArtDeco was a popular and trendy interior design style.
What are the characteristics of ArtDeco or Gatsby's style?
ArtDeco is inspired by cubism, modernism, and futurism, and reflects the newfound freedom of mass production and machinery usage. ArtDeco style is described by repeated patterns of geometric shapes and machine-like motifs; black, white, and gold colors; heavy ornamentation, and sometimes floral designs. The lines are clean and the patterns are symmetrical. Everything feels luxurious, glamorous, and extravagant.
However, ArtDeco is not maximalism. ArtDeco is more like a fine collection of the most luxurious items, whether it is a sofa, carpet, or wallpaper. ArtDeco style pays attention to the smallest details, the rooms are not stuffed with furniture and decor elements, rather there is lots of room to breathe and appreciate the interior.

Fan patterned ArtDeco wallpaper
This is one of the most recognizable ArtDeco patterns. The fans can be of different looks – in an oval shape, in a triangle shape, with sharp or rounded edges. They can be arranged very closely or have space in between them. The fans most likely will be decorated with lines that continue the fan shape. The colors are bold with strong contrast. For a powerful ArtDeco statement, the wallpaper should be in black, gold, or white. But if you want just the reminiscence of ArtDeco, other colors are fine too. If you enjoy the fan pattern, have a look at these ArtDeco wallpapers: “Gatsby’s party” or “The Lodge”.
ArtDeco wallpaper with geometric shapes.
Geometric shapes are the basis of ArtDeco patterns and wallpaper prints. You can create so many beautiful variations with them! You can have layered rectangles, patterns with triangles, or make a statement with a diamond shape wallpaper pattern. Geometric shapes and lines are able to come together in many variations that will create beautiful ArtDeco mosaic patterns. If that is something you might like, check out these ArtDeco wallpapers: “Splendid Aurum” or “Sun Cottage”.
ArtDeco wallpaper with Spiral pattern.
Spirals are a beautiful pattern in what to get lost in. The repetitive pattern brings some sort of visual illusion that makes the prints much more mesmerizing. Spirals can be in circles, triangles, or rectangles. Sometimes it can even be an imitated spiral pattern, for example, as in this
“Old Sport” wallpaper where the spiral look is achieved by having a circle in a circle shape.
ArtDeco wallpaper inspired by machinery
ArtDeco is a design style from an era when machines are starting to be used more and more in everyday life. It includes cars, trains, and other traveling vehicles as well as everyday use items like electric blenders, TV, and vacuum cleaners. Due to the rise of machinery, the 1920ties is a time when people were dreaming a lot about the future which resulted in lots of movies inspired by the future as well as futuristic interior design trends. It is reflected in wallpaper patterns as well – people imagined that the future will be full of machines and that the decor will be coordinated with that. If you are curious about ArtDeco wallpaper that is inspired by machinery take a look at these wallpapers: “Silent Film” and
“Gilded Ballroom”.
Nature-inspired patterns in ArtDeco wallpaper.
Even though ArtDeco is all about machinery, sleek lines, and futurism, it also has a place for florals and nature-inspired elements. However, unlike rococo and romanticism, ArtDeco florals and nature prints are not realistic but rather shapes and forms of different natural elements – stylized versions of the real thing. If you are looking for some ArtDeco floral or nature prints, check out these wallpapers: “Leaf Tiara”, “Desirable Old World”, and “Elegant Foliage”.
Types of wallpapers and which one to choose?
There are two types of wallpaper: stick and peel and traditional. Traditional wallpaper will be attached to the wall by adding extra adhesive to the back of the wallpaper. It will stick really hard and you will need extra tools to get it off. However, stick and peel wallpaper is like a big sticker – you just take off the protective layer from the back and stick it to the wall. It is also easy to remove and leaves no glue residue.
Which one to choose is up to your preference and practical viewpoint. If you are living in a rental, most likely you will have to go for the stick and peel option. In your own home, you can choose traditional wallpaper. If you want to experiment with your place and change the look often, we recommend the stick and peel option.
